This earthquake was recorded at a focal depth of 37km below the ground in Peru on 08-13-1987 T15:23:06, where it released a sizeable amount of seismic energy and reached a magnitude of 6.4 on the richter scale. Considering this quake occurred 37km under the surface, it is best classified as a deep geologic event. Earthquake intensity was also measured using the Mercalli intensity scale which quantifies the severity of shaking felt by the quake. On a scale of 1 (barely sensed) to 12 (completely devastating), this quake had an intensity of 5. An earthquake of this magnitude would likely be causing slight damage in specially designed structures; considerable damage in ordinary substantial buildings with partial collapse. Damage would be great in poorly built structures. People could expect the dall of chimneys, factory stacks, columns, monuments, walls. Quakes can often be deadly, and this event occurred in a populated area claiming 1 souls and destroying structures.
