JAPAN:HONSHU:NIIGATAPREFECTURE

This earthquake was recorded at a focal depth of 16km below the ground in Japan on 10-23-2004 T08:56:00, where it released a sizeable amount of seismic energy and reached a magnitude of 6.6 on the richter scale. Considering this quake occurred 16km under the surface, it is best classified as a deep geologic event. An earthquake of this magnitude would likely be causing considerable damage to specially designed structures; well-designed frame structures thrown out of plumb. Damage would be great in substantial buildings, with partial collapse. Expect that buildings would be shifted off foundations. Quakes can often be deadly, and this event occurred in a populated area claiming 40 souls and destroying 6000 structures.
