Magnitude: 7.9M
Time: 02-19-1600
Country: PERU

PERU:VOLCANHUAYNAPUTINA

This earthquake was recorded at a focal depth of 20km below the ground in Peru on 02-19-1600, where it released a sizeable amount of seismic energy and reached a magnitude of 7.9 on the richter scale. Considering this quake occurred 20km under the surface, it is best classified as a deep geologic event. Earthquake intensity was also measured using the Mercalli intensity scale which quantifies the severity of shaking felt by the quake. On a scale of 1 (barely sensed) to 12 (completely devastating), this quake had an intensity of 11. An earthquake of this magnitude would likely be causing destruction to well-built wooden structures; most masonry and frame structures with foundations would be destroyed. Expect rails to be bent, bridges detroyed, and loss of life.
